Celtic selling Leigh Griffiths would be no disaster; but a Scottish switch seems risky

Celtic fans have been left struggling to agree whether Leigh Griffiths deserves to stay at Parkhead beyond the summer.

The Sunday Post reported yesterday that Aberdeen were rumoured to be interested in the Scotland international. This comes after they secured the pre-contract agreement of Scott Brown last week.

The report stated, however, that Celtic would go into a state of transfer lockdown. Any decision on the future of the club’s in-demand players would rest solely with the new manager.

Griffiths, meanwhile, has had another disappointing season. After only netting 12 goals last season, he’s managed to bag just half of that total in 20 games this term [Transfermarkt].

With a rebuild set to happen this summer, Griffiths’ future is up in the air. With a contract that runs out in 2022, there’s no guarantee he’ll be here come the start of the next campaign.

Celtic must beware of who they sell Leigh Griffiths to

Many will say that you shouldn’t sell a player if you think they’re good to enough to perform against you. But the truth is that Celtic need to be clever about whom they sell Griffiths to.

Should we send him off to Pittodrie, chances are it’s a move that would come back to haunt us. Every single game against them would have the narrative of “will Leigh Griffiths score against Celtic?”. It’s something that Celtic fans certainly couldn’t be bothered with. And chances are it would happen too.

Of course, it’s down to any new boss to determine where they think Griff’s future lies. He certainly isn’t a definite to depart. It could be the case that a new man gets him firing again.

But you do wonder just how much credit he has left in the bank. He’s been an incredible signing for the Hoops. 122 goals to his name and over seven years of service put in [Transfermarkt]. Superb.

However, there’s a debate to be had regarding where he should be in the long-term.

It’s clear this is a subject that has severely split the supporters. We took a look on the wacky world of Twitter to see what many are saying:
