Interim boss John Kennedy has been called out for his performance today by many Celtic fans who believe it’s time for him to go.
Kennedy has only been in charge of six games since taking over from Neil Lennon on a temporary basis. However, his record so far has been patchy, with only three wins, two draws, and a defeat to his name.
That loss came to Rangers today in what was his second consecutive Glasgow Derby in which he’s failed to win. It’s also the second consecutive derby in which he’s shown a worrying lack of tactical nous for a long-term coach.
Taking over from Lennon was a glorious opportunity for him. Let’s not kid ourselves, he’s been tainted with being involved in more than one failed managerial regime. Both Lennon and Ronny Deila had him as part of their coaching staff. His longevity at the club has long been questioned by supporters, who fail to understand the role he carries out.
With huge changes coming to the club in the summer, Kennedy’s future is finally in question. Will he leave at the end of the season and be part of the major clearout? Or will he bag yet another spot in the new regime? If it’s the latter, it will again be a sign that the new manager isn’t being allowed to make his own decisions.
John Kennedy decisions have left Celtic fans disappointed
But today’s 2-0 loss at Ibrox to Rangers was a new low for Kennedy in the dugout. It was his chance to show that he can land a blow on Steven Gerrard. A chance to show that Celtic don’t have as bad a squad as is being made out.
Instead, he’s made a total mess of the opportunity. There’s been no reprieve for him in supporters’ eyes as his results have largely been poor. No pat on the back from supporters who have watched inconsistent displays play out before their eyes under Kennedy.
Today, had he beaten Rangers, it would’ve gone a long way to getting supporters back feeling good about Kennedy again. It would’ve been a huge boost to the lack of trust the Celtic faithful appear to have in the interim boss.
But instead, we’re left wondering where we go from here and hoping Kennedy isn’t a part of it. We now only have four games remaining this season and will now officially have our first trophyless campaign since 2009/10. Kennedy, whether he likes it or not, has played a major part in that failure.
