Celtic keep up Champions League pressure with class SWPL win
Celtic FC Women are keeping the pressure on at the top of the SWPL 1 table after a 3-0 victory away to Hearts this afternoon.
Fran Alonso’s side move into second place on 38 points, two ahead of rivals Rangers.
It comes after a battling draw against league leaders Glasgow City on Wednesday night.
City and Rangers play against Forfar Farmington and Spartans later this afternoon.
Chloe Craig opened the scoring for Celtic on her 200th appearance for the club.
Exchanging passes with Rachel Donaldson on the right flank in the 53rd minute, Craig buried a low left-footed drive into the far bottom corner from the edge of the box. It was a smashing finish.
A through ball from new signing London Pollard then caused mayhem at the heart of the opposition defence and, facing pressure from Anna Filbey, Clare Williamson couldn’t stop herself from scoring an own goal.
Substitute Pollard was again involved for the third goal. Her excellent run resulted in a cross that could only be parried by goalkeeper Parker Smith, with Filbey smashing in the loose ball from close range.
Still just 16 and adjusting to life at Celtic, Pollard is already proving to be a fine acquisition and could be the kind of signing that helps take this team to the next level in terms of competing for European places and trophies.
The top two sides in SWPL 1 qualify for next season’s Women’s Champions League. Now unbeaten in seven matches, can Alonso and his team beat Rangers to it?
Next up is a home match against Spartans on Wednesday night.
