Fran Alonso’s Celtic FC Women again showed the attributes that mark them out as title contenders in SWPL 1 this season, after a thrilling comeback 2-2 draw at home to champions Glasgow City.

City undoubtedly remain the team to beat in Scottish women’s football and are looking to win yet another league title this term.

However, after Celtic ran them close last season, it seems they are up for the fight again. That battling spirit that was so thrilling to watch last year is again apparent in this Celtic outfit.

Glasgow City were cruising to all three points at half-time today after ropey Celtic defending and clinical finishing from the away team had them two goals up.

Then, Alonso made a couple of dynamite substitutions, bringing on summer signings Olivia Chance and Shen Mengyu.

New Zealand international Chance was a double goal hero, following up the ball twice in support of Mengyu, who broke the City lines superbly on both occasions.

With the game poised at 2-2 in the final half an hour, it was Celtic who pushed for a winner and a famous league victory.

That wasn’t quite achieved, but Alonso will be delighted to hold City to a point and move on to more top-flight challenges.

The Ghirls play away to Motherwell next Sunday looking to get back to winning ways.
