Celtic picked up a 3-0 victory at home to Motherwell in the SWPL this afternoon to keep the pressure on Glasgow City and Rangers at the top of the table.

With the top two sides qualifying for next season’s Women’s Champions League, there are massive incentives for Fran Alonso’s team to keep up their impressive form right now.

There’s even still the possibility of a stunning title win on the cards.

Today’s win was crucial with rivals Glasgow City and Rangers facing off in the 16:10 kick-off later this afternoon. One or both of those teams will drop points.

Celtic have, for now, moved up to second position in the SWPL on 34 points, with Rangers on 33 and Glasgow City on 36 ahead of their match.

Rachel Donaldson was the star of the show for Celtic today, scoring two first-half goals to send the Ghirls on their way to victory.

Her first came on 18 minutes from a dangerous Sarah Ewens cross, which was deftly headed into the back of the net.

She connected with another cross 17 minutes later. Jacynta fired in a low ball that just escaped Ewens before Donaldson expertly controlled and finished low into the corner.

Sarah Teegarden also found herself on the scoresheet before the interval with a poaching header from yet another cross originating on the right flank.

With the game done and dusted at half-time, Alonso had the luxury of making multiple substitutions in the second half, resting some of his key players and giving others valuable game time.

Notably, there was a debut off the bench for new striker signing London Pollard. She previously impressed at Forfar Farmington, scoring a stunning goal against Celtic and at 16 will now hugely benefit from daily training.

It’s the perfect result ahead of this Wednesday night’s mammoth match at home to league leaders Glasgow City on Wednesday night.

That fixture could well be decisive when it comes to the title race and Celtic’s Champions League ambitions.

Alonso’s team will be taking great confidence into that one. However, with both league defeats coming at the hands of City this season, they’ll also know improvement is needed.

In other news, Celtic reportedly scouting Ali McCann today as transfer planning continues.
