Celtic FC Women have maintained their perfect record in the SWPL after a 2-1 win over rivals Glasgow City this evening, ensuring they go top of the table.
Celtic are the only team to win all eight games at the start of the league season. Tonight’s results mean they now sit two points clear of Rangers and have a five-point gap to City.
The ever-reliable Chloe Craig was the player to power the team ahead in Airdrie, converting a penalty after Kenzie Weir hauled down Kit Loferski in the box.
Weir was also sent off and with just 20 minutes remaining, it looked like Celtic would cruise a famous victory.
However, City showed why they have been so successful and forced Kelly Clark into an unfortunate own goal to equalise at 1-1 with 15 minutes remaining.
After that equaliser, it all got rather frantic and end to end. Both teams gave it a good go to secure the three points live on Sky Sports.
Then, dramatically, it was Celtic who poured forward into the City box and Colette Cavanagh who brilliantly finished to make 2-1 in the 89th minute.
City were unbeaten heading into tonight’s match and everyone knows that these head-to-head fixtures between the three full-time Glasgow sides are vital in determining the direction of silverware at the end of the season. This was a big result.
The Ghirls now have important league games against Motherwell and Partick Thistle on the immediate horizon before another massive derby match at home to Rangers on October 22nd.
Win that and the Celtic title hype will really kick into gear.
