Fran Alonso has vowed that his Celtic FC Women team will win the SWPL 1 title one day after narrowly missing out on a final-day triumph earlier this afternoon.

Celtic beat Hearts 2-0 in front of almost 16,000 supporters at Celtic Park but a stoppage time Glasgow City strike at Ibrox meant the historically dominant women’s team in Scotland came out on top again.

Echoing Ange Postecoglou’s famous ‘we never stop’ mantra, Alonso admitted he was left gutted by the way the day panned out but says he will be back again to lead the Ghirls to another title challenge.

He said, on Twitter: “Devastated is an understatement! Football can be so cruel! So proud of the Ghirls and so proud of the over 15K fans supporting us for the whole game. Sorry we didn’t win the league today but it will happen one day because WE NEVER STOP. I love you.”

Alonso certainly has the backing of his squad and the Celtic support. Thousands stayed behind despite today’s disappointment to applaud and chant for the team’s efforts this season.

There’s plenty of excitement left too with another big crowd expected at Hampden Park next Sunday for the Scottish Women’s Cup Final against Rangers.

The Ghirls are the holders of the trophy and will be eager to defend their crown at the national stadium and end the season on a massive high against their rivals.

Today was a blow for all fans of the women’s team but it’s clear to see it is but one step on the rung to greater things in the future. Scottish women’s football is going from strength to strength and nowhere is that better demonstrated than with Celtic.
