Celtic FC Women have heartbreakingly lost out on the SWPL title despite beating Hearts 2-0 at Celtic Park on Sunday afternoon.
Caitlin Hayes, who has scored so many big goals for Celtic, got the team on their way to victory before the interval, in front of a record-breaking 15,000+ crowd at Paradise. Natasha Flint then scored a superb headed effort from a Chloe Craig. However, league success was not to be.
The result looked enough to secure the SWPL 1 title on a dramatic final day, despite going into the match sitting in third position. However, City remarkably netted in stoppage time at Ibrox through Lauren Davidson, winning 1-0 and bursting the bubble of what was about to be a famous Sunday Celtic Party. Agonisingly, much of the Paradise crowd thought Rangers had equalised right at the death, sending the title back to Celtic Park – but it was ruled out for a foul.
Celtic SWPL title win would have been a huge moment
Today was almost an incredible achievement for Fran Alonso’s side. They’ve been making fantastic progress in recent years. The title was everything they’ve been working towards.
Along the way, they’ve captured the imagination of thousands of Celtic supporters. That so many were at Celtic Park today, making a lot of noise, is a testament to the journey this squad have taken.
With a Scottish Women’s Cup Final on the horizon, this could still be a winning season. Today will be hard for them to get over, but they must pick themselves up for next Sunday’s showpiece occasion vs Rangers at Hampden.
Today’s results mean they have at least qualified for the UEFA Women’s Champions League in next year’s edition of the tournament, which will be incredibly exciting for the team and for supporters. It’s just the second time that Celtic have managed to do this.
The squad should be proud of themselves today and we’ll continue to enjoy following their ups and downs in the quest for history.
