More fans than ever before will be able to watch Celtic FC Women games, as the Scottish Women’s Premier League announced an improved TV rights deal with the BBC.

The agreement, which runs until the 2024/25 season, will see a minimum of 26 live SWPL games shown on BBC Alba, with BBC Scotland also having the option of a live game each weekend, in addition to extended highlights from each round of fixtures.

In a statement on the SPFL website, the managing director of the SWPL Fiona McIntyre said: “We’re really pleased to have agreed this new, record deal, which is great news for the League and supporters across the country.

“The ongoing partnership with both BBC ALBA and BBC Scotland will be vital in growing the game in this country in the coming years, and their long-term support of the women’s game is truly appreciated.

“This significant new agreement represents the growth and ambition we have for the League.

“It was a really exciting opening weekend of the SWPL season, and we know that viewers will be in for a treat for the rest of the season.”

Celtic’s 9-0 trouncing of Hibs on Sunday was the first match of the new deal, with the Excelsior drubbing shown live on BBC Alba.

It’s great news for the profile of the women’s game in Scotland, with regular televised matches crucial in enhancing its visibility and presence – and this in turn will be great for Celtic’s Women’s team, who completed a historic cup double last season.
