Celtic B picked up a quality 5-0 victory at home to Edinburgh University in the Scottish Lowland Football League this afternoon, maintaining their second spot in the table.
Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus’ side were following up on a midweek win over Bo’ness United, trying to keep with league leaders Rangers B.
Ben McPherson opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a deflected strike from the edge of the box but the game was kept tight until the interval at 1-0.
In the second half, there was a goalscoring deluge. Corey Thomson netted in the top corner after 56 minutes before striker Joey Dawson came off the bench to score his third goal in three matches.
Ben Quinn, fresh from scoring a double against Bo’ness, then added the fourth and fifth Celtic goals of the afternoon to stand out with a second brace in as many games.
The result moves the Bhoys onto 39 points after 18 matches, which isn’t a bad return at all given they’ve been playing so many fixtures in other competitions in the early stages of the campaign.
However, they remain five points adrift of city rivals Rangers and full focus is now being put on league form to try and address that deficit.
Berwick Rangers, sitting 12th, arrive next week before games against Cowdenbeath, Tranent Juniors and Dalbeattie Star. That all comes before a big derby against Rangers at Celtic Park on December 30th.
By the end of the month will have a good idea of which direction the league season is heading in. Right now, the youngsters are in good form.
