The career of former Celtic youngster Liam Morrison continues to progress nicely at Bayern Munich after he made the senior matchday squad for their Bundesliga clash away to Werder Bremen this evening.

Morrison journeyed through the Bhoys academy before leaving for Germany in 2019 and has been working his way through the Bayern set-up. Now he’s knocking on the door of senior action as a fringe member of the first team.

Recently turning 20, Morrison signed a new Bayern contract in March that keeps him at the club until at least the summer of 2025. He has been training regularly with the senior side of late whilst also appearing consistently for Bayern II in the German regional leagues.

The Scotland U21 centre-back has always had significant potential and it seems that could now even be realised at one of Europe’s elite clubs.

At the very least, his progress with Bayern should allow him to find a viable opportunity at a decent level elsewhere, even if he doesn’t make a big breakthrough.

Although it’s never nice to think of ‘one that got away’ from Celtic, it is heartening to see a young player who has been nurtured by our coaches get a foothold within such a talented group.

Another former Celtic youngster, Barry Hepburn, is also at Bayern Munich. The winger has been less involved than Morrison and his contract expires this summer. However, the 19-year-old also has a strong chance of making a good career for himself if he stays on his current track.

It’ll be interesting indeed to see where Morrison goes from here.
