Celtic youngster Luca Connell has earned recognition from the SPFL as one of the top players in the first round of the Challenge Cup.

Connell was one of the starters as Celtic B took on Annan Athletic at home.

Goals from Lee O’Connor and Scott Robertson provided the 2-0 victory and progression to the second round. Greenock Morton now await Tommy McIntyre’s side.

Connell was recognised by the league as one of Celtic’s top performers, named in the team of the round as a star man.

The official SPFL website said of his performance: “The midfielder’s quality and range of passing were on display for all to see as the young Hoops defeated Annan Athletic 2-0 in Airdrie. He helped to control the tempo of the game and was a stand-out for his side.”

Connell was involved in the opening Celtic goal, feeding a through ball to Brody Paterson, who crossed for O’Connor to finish.

The Republic of Ireland youth international has made slow progress as part of Celtic squad over the last couple of years.

However, supporters remain hopeful he will get an opportunity this season under Ange Postecoglou. If not, the prospect of a development loan seems likely.

Connell is arguably too talented to be playing Lowland League football or featuring for the B team in the Challenge Cup. He should be testing his skills at a higher level, perhaps in the Scottish Premiership at another team or in the English lower leagues.

Using a loan to good effect could prove to the Celtic coaching staff he deserves more of an opportunity in the senior set-up.

Whether it’s at the Bhoys, or elsewhere, fans want to see him playing more regularly.

These supporters have taken to social media today to share their thoughts on his situation…

In other news, Celtic boss Postecoglou makes Kyogo prediction that is ominous for the rest of Scottish football.
