Most Celtic supporters will not know much about Robert Rachwal, but the 19-year-old was once rated highly enough to earn a professional deal and a place on the Champions League registration list.
He came through Celtic’s Academy, played for the B team but never made a senior appearance. Rachwal has now left Glasgow to join Polish third-tier club Podhale Nowy Targ.
Celtic have not allowed a future first-team regular to walk away, but Rachwal’s story is one that will resonate with fans and many youngsters at Celtic’s Academy.

Robert Rachwal lost the year Celtic needed him to progress
Rachwal ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in December 2023, only months after signing his first professional Celtic deal. He was expected to be out for between ten and 11 months.
After earning his first professional Celtic contract at 16, he was registered for the Champions League in 2024, but that was little more than recognition of his academy status.
The midfielder eventually returned and scored twice for Celtic B against Albion Rovers in April. He was contributing again, but he was doing it as his Celtic contract started to expire.
The youngster was not close to Martin O’Neill’s first-team squad. The injury had left him trying to recover lost ground in a pathway that already offers few openings.
Rachwal highlights Celtic’s unforgiving academy pathway
Darren O’Dea has questioned how Celtic academy players are supposed to break through when the club continually recruits ahead of them. Rachwal was trying to do it after missing the best part of a season.
His departure cannot be ranked alongside Ben Gannon-Doak or Rocco Vata simply because he has left Celtic. Nothing in his B-team record proved he was ready to play for the first team.
His exit instead shows how little margin there is for a young player whose progress is hampered by injury. Rachwal returned from a major injury, scored goals and still ended his Celtic career nowhere near the senior side.
Podhale can now offer him the senior football he needs. Celtic could do nothing about the injury, but their academy pathway gave him no realistic chance to recover the year it cost him.
