Celtic youngster Adam Montgomery had a storming mid-week out on loan at St Johnstone, scoring his first professional goal and creating two assists in a Scottish League Cup win.
The Perth side badly needed a win away to Elgin City on Tuesday night after poor early draws, with no penalty extra points, against Annan Athletic and Queen of the South.
Montgomery, 20, stepped up to get Callum Davidson’s side on their way to three points, scoring just 11 minutes into the encounter.
He went on to provide another two assists, with the away team rushing to a 4-0 lead before Elgin pulled two back late on.
St Johnstone still have a remote chance of making it through to the knockout stages of the competition despite their poor start and will host Ayr United on Saturday.
For Montgomery, Tuesday’s game was a proud moment in his career on a personal basis and he took to Instagram this week to share his joy, congratulated by a host of his peers including Bosun Lawal and Owen Moffat.
Montgomery is on a short-term loan at McDiarmid Park, with the deal only running until January, so he still has a chance of featuring for the Bhoys at some stage this term.
He managed to make 18 appearances for the senior side last season before making a move to Aberdeen in January that ultimately ended in a disappointing injury.
Hopefully he can continue impressing on the left flank for St Johnstone and we can revisit his potential to make an impact at the Bhoys in the new year.
