Managed by the legendary Celtic figure Jimmy McGrory, the Hoops took on Rangers in what was the first-ever Old Firm meeting in a Scottish League Cup Final.

Celtic were aiming to regain the title after winning the 1956 edition against Partick Thistle – it’s safe to say they did so in record fashion.

Celtic ripped Rangers apart at Hampden, with Billy McPhail netting a hat-trick and Neil Mochan scoring a brace. Willie Fernie and Sammy Wilson were also on the scoresheet for the rampant Bhoys.

Hoops fans of today will know the brilliant ‘Hampden in the Sun’ song, which is a direct reference to this famous League Cup win.

Celtic’s 7-1 win over Rangers remains the record scoreline recorded in a major British cup final and will take some doing to ever be topped.

At this moment in history, Rangers were desperate to finally get their hands on the Scottish Cup trophy again. They hadn’t won it since 1905, with Celtic lifting the honour six times in that time.

The Hoops were in no mood to give them a chance of getting to the final as they proceeded to pile more misery on Rangers with a crushing 5-0 victory at Hampden.

Jimmy McGrory loves a huge win over Gers and was involved in this high-scoring triumph as a player. He scored twice in the game, with Adam McLean and Adam Thompson completing the rout.

The Glasgow Herald dubbed it a “sensational victory” for Celtic in a match that attracted a record crowd between two Scottish clubs at the time.

And now for the match no present-living Celtic fan will forget in a hurry. The Hoops were ruthlessly formidable on the day as Rangers were completely dominated at Celtic Park.

Celtic fans were more than desperate than ever to win this game because their eighth Premiership title in a row could be wrapped up against their greatest rivals.

Odsonne Edouard fired in a first-half double with James Forrest helping to make it 3-0 at the interval. Callum McGregor and Dedryck Boyata rubbed salt in the Rangers wounds in the second-half to see out an incredible victory.

Celtic would go on to win the Scottish Cup that season and complete a historic Double Treble, which would then be bettered the following season with a Treble Treble.
