Many English supporters suddenly seem to want both Celtic and Rangers in the Premier League after the latest nonsense surrounding the European Super League.
The controversial ESL is being battered from pillar to post from all angles. A joint announcement last night from 12 founder clubs stated their intention to form the new competition. This would see them break away from official UEFA competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League.
Major clubs around Europe such as Barcelona, AC Milan, Juventus, Manchester United, and Man City have all agreed to join [BBC]. As well as the 12 founder clubs, another three will come on board to make up the inaugural season.
Fans and pundits have come down hard on the competition, with the founding clubs offering themselves a divine right to play in a major European competition. UEFA have also claimed that any player who competes will be unable to represent their country at major international competitions [The Sun].
The new ESL is said to be something that would coincide with domestic leagues. Therefore, all clubs involved would still be plying their trade domestically with all six Premier League clubs competing in both competitions. In essence, all they’re doing is guaranteeing themselves a Champions League-like qualification on an annual basis.
Celtic suddenly eyed up by English fans for a Premier League invitation after European Super League guff
With Premier League fans across England urging them all to be kicked out if it goes ahead, they’ve been turning their attention over to how they fill the gap. Perhaps surprisingly, that’s seen plenty suddenly extend an open-armed invitation to Celtic and Rangers to join.
Funny considering the sheer hatred and level of disdain many would’ve had for that idea in the past. Celtic and Rangers have long since tried to join the Premier League, with the English clubs rejecting the proposal back in 2009.

And in fairness, it would go against what would be right in the bigger picture. So much of the anger towards the founding member clubs of the ESL is that greed is involved. That they’re robbing clubs lower down in England, Italy, and Spain of vital finances that come from their involvement.
The same could be said for Celtic if we left Scottish football, especially during a pandemic. The same money in terms of sponsorships and TV deals just wouldn’t be there. If you remove the Glasgow clubs from the league, goodness knows what it would do to the rest. There’s a long way to go before this proposal is back on the table.
But even so, it’s funny to see so many extend such a warm invitation to us all of a sudden. It’s certainly never something they wanted in the past. Here, we take a look at some of that reaction:
