Walking out at Celtic Park is a feeling like no other, as many players will tell you.
Whether that be wearing the green and white hoops of the Celtic top or as an opposition player, Parkhead has that feeling that can leave you speechless.
In fact, Zlatan Ibrahimovic once said: “I have played in the biggest games in world football. But I have never experienced an atmosphere like I did at Celtic Park.”
When the Bhoys come out in front of the Paradise faithful, there will often be a familiar song played, but what is it called and what are the origins behind it? 67 Hail Hail takes a deep dive into the famous song.
Ferenc Puskas on the Celtic Park atmosphere
What is the Celtic walkout song?
Conveniently, the song is also known as The Celtic song.
It’s a song that’s been adopted by many other clubs throughout the years, including Everton, but the Celtic Song is the original and best version of the anthem.
What are the origins of the Celtic walkout song?
First written in 1961, the Celtic Song was performed by Glen Daly and that is the version you will hear when the players walk out at Parkhead.
On the 50th anniversary of the song, lifelong Celtic fan and the late Pogues star Shane McGowan re-recorded the song in 2011.
There is also a special version sung by Celtic legend Bertie Auld which can be heard here.
What are the lyrics to the Celtic walkout song?
The official lyrics to the song are:
Sure it’s a grand old team to play for,
Sure it’s a grand old team bedad,
When you read its history,
It’s enough to make your heart grow sad,
God bless them.
We don’t care if we win, lose or draw,
Darn the hair do we care,
Because we only know that there’s going to be a show,
And the Glasgow Celtic will be there.
Sure it’s the best darn team in Scotland,
And the players all are grand,
We support the Celtic,
As they are the finest in the land we love them,
We’ll be there to give the Bhoys a cheer
When the league flag flies,
And it cheers us up when we know the Scottish Cup,
Is coming home to rest at Paradise.
Sure it’s a grand old team to play for,
Yes it’s a grand old team bedad,
When we read its history,
It’s enough to make your heart grow sad,
God bless them.
We don’t care if we win lose or draw,
Darn the hair do we care,
Because we only know that there’s going to be a show,
And the Glasgow Celtic will be there,
And the Glasgow Celtic will be there.
