What is a guard of honour?

A guard of honour is when one person, or team, congratulate an opposition side on their recent achievement.

It’s usually seen as a mark of respect in football, and other sports.

Do clubs have to give a guard of honour?

No, clubs aren’t forced to give a guard of honour and it is something both teams can agree on before a game.

Have Rangers and Celtic ever given each other a guard of honour before?

A guard of honour for either one of the teams has been a touchy subject.

In 2019, when the champions visited Ibrox, Rangers boss at the time Steven Gerrard confirmed that they wouldn’t perform a guard of honour.

Then, when Rangers won the league in 2021, the Hoops opted not to give one, with John Kennedy telling Sky Sports at the time: “It is something that we have discussed. It is a subject that has been brought up and I have seen several people talking about it.

“It was the same two years ago when we were champions and if I am being honest, I don’t think such a fuss was being made about it. I don’t see it as a big issue.

“For us, we spoke collectively about it and we won’t do it. It is not about lacking class, nothing like that, because we are a club that always shows class and dignity and do what is right.

“But ultimately this same group of players went in as champions and didn’t get the respect that time if you want to call it that.”
