Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has cleared up a number of issues surrounding today’s squad for the match away to Livingston in the Scottish Premiership.

The shock headline news from the team announcement was Boli Bolingoli’s inclusion. The former Rapid Vienna man made his first start for the Bhoys since February 2020.

However, Carl Starfelt’s absence was also a surprise after featuring away to Real Betis on Thursday night. Stephen Welsh came in as his replacement and struggled when defending Livingston’s opening goal today.

Postecoglou discussed those selection decisions and more in his pre-match interview.

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland [14:14]: “There are some significant absences at the moment for a variety of reasons – some guys have come in late, others are obviously injured – so we’re going through a bit of a lean spell in terms of people available but we get a couple back today which is really good for us and that will help us moving forward

“Some of the rotation is just to bring some fresh legs in. It was a tough game on Thursday night, particularly in the conditions which were really warm.

“We brought Boli in because, to be fair to him, he’s been working really hard and waiting for an opportunity. He’s got one today.

“Obviously it’s great to get Liel back in the side. We’ve been cautious with James McCarthy because of his interrupted pre-season but he’s been ready to get a run. Carl Starfelt didn’t feel well yesterday and missed training so we decided to leave him out.”

So far the first half hasn’t exactly gone to plan, but there is still enough in this game for Celtic to pull a result out of the bag.

It’s another Celtic eleven that hasn’t played much football together. We really need our big players back in the team soon as possible, because this makeshift group are never going to be as fluent as we need.
