Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has paid tribute to the supporters at Hampden tonight after their incredible backing for the team and Bertie Auld.

The atmosphere at the national stadium was more akin to a European away trip than a match in a domestic competition. From the minute’s applause for Bertie to a jaw-dropping pyro display in the second half, they never let up.

At the full-time whistle, there was a massive roar of appreciation and jubilant scenes as the Celtic squad celebrated with the crowd.

Postecoglou was delighted in his post-match interview, telling The Daily Record: “The players can’t think because we’re a new group, it’s OK to make a semi-final or not win silverware. We have to set these standards from the beginning. The players rose to that challenge today.

“Everyone understands the rebuild we had to do. But even when we were having a difficult period I haven’t made excuses for anyone. We should be measured against the benchmarks already set at this club. If we fall short, it’s up to us to make sure we improve.

“Today was important for our supporters because I thought they were outstanding. The atmosphere was brilliant. This is where they want to be as well, getting behind their team in big games, on a big stage.”

This is the first time, I can think of, that the manager has directly addressed winning silverware. He clearly feels Celtic are on the right track to deliver success this season. That’s certainly what he’s telling the players based on these comments.

The League Cup final comes before Christmas and isn’t going to be easy whether it’s against Rangers or Hibernian. If we can bag a trophy before the calendar year is even out and before the January transfer window has arrived, it will be an excellent sign that Celtic and Postecoglou can be a marriage made in heaven long-term.
