Ange Postecoglou believes Hyeongyu Oh is going to be a “fantastic player” for Celtic moving forward, after the striker netted a crucial goal in today’s 3-1 victory over Hibernian.
Oh’s diving header from a corner pushed Celtic ahead in the match at 2-1 after 82 minutes, having come back from a goal deficit to eventually win all three points. His movement and bravery were notable in slamming the ball home, with the South Korean then ripping his top off to celebrate with the Celtic fans, in turn chanting his name.
It was a fantastic moment for the 21-year-old and after the game, Postecoglou praised him on BBC Radio Scotland [17:24].
The Celtic boss said: “Strikers thrive on that. He’s going to be a fantastic player for us. We’re slowly integrating him into things on and off the field, but I see him in every day in training. He’s such a presence, a physical presence and he has got good quality in him as well. He’s just really hungry to succeed.
“Today I thought, with the nature of the game and the way they were playing, pushing him on with Kyogo I thought we could really put some pressure on with his penalty box presence. That’s what he did, not just the goal he scored, every time the ball went into that area he was there.
“He’ll take a lot from that goal and go away with the national team now, come back to us and hopefully kick on.”
The forward has now netted three goals for the Bhoys since arriving from South Korea but today’s was undoubtedly his most important yet. It was a moment of real arrival and a sign he can be counted on in tense, difficult games where there’s a lot at stake.
The adulation he received from the fans was magical. Beyond the outpouring of emotion at the goal, his chant to Seven Nation Army rang around Celtic Park – a new hero is born in many people’s eyes.
I can’t wait to see a further upward trajectory in his Celtic career from here.
