Whatever happens in football, you will never get the better of supporters and Brendan Rodgers found that out on Wednesday night.

Celtic beat Dundee United 2-0 to move 16 points clear at the top of the Premiership table, days after a few rants from Brendan Rodgers.

The Celtic boss was pretty vocal towards the fans when he defended the team’s style of play after the win over St Mirren and then the Kieran Tierney-related cries.

Tierney could return to Celtic, with his Arsenal contract to expire in the summer and the London club expected to let him go.

As you can understand, that has got supporters excited because they are now expecting the Scotland star to return where it all began.

Hence why Tierney’s name was being sung against St Mirren, but Rodgers saw it as a disrespect towards Greg Taylor.

That sparked a debate over the last few days and the Celtic fans had the perfect response against Dundee United, as well as how they were feeling towards the team’s style.

Celtic fans’ frustrations against Dundee United

Daizen Maeda opened the scoring after 23 minutes, but the fans had to wait for Reo Hatate to come off the bench and provide that cushion with less than ten minutes from time.

Following Rodgers defending the team’s style of play over the week, Allan Preston noted the champions trying to score the ‘perfect’ goal, as he told BBC Radio Scotland.

Pat Bonner added that, because the second goal didn’t get less then ten minutes from time, then there was a ‘wee bit of frustration’ from those inside Parkhead.

“You know what I thought about Celtic and what they haven’t done is,” said Preston. “I was watching them against St Johnstone, Engels especially, they put in some brilliant crosses. They haven’t done that. They are trying to score the perfect goal, for me. Passing it around.”

Bonner added: “A wee bit of frustration with the fans kick in when you don’t get it (that second goal). You are always a wee bit concerned. There was a wee bit of that (frustration from the fans). Of course, fans, as you would have anticipated.”

Celtic fans chant for club legends after Brendan Rodgers’ Kieran Tierney criticism

The Celtic legends of the past were serenaded during the win over Dundee United, as the fans responded in a brilliant fashion to Rodgers’ criticism over those Tierney chants.

Allan Preston and Pat Bonner were pitchside to hear it all and they loved the reaction from the faithful, as they added on BBC Radio Scotland.

From Charlie Mulgrew to the King Henrik Larsson, the only disappointment from Preston was that Bonner’s name wasn’t sung.

Preston added: “The Charlie Mulgrew song was out. Henrik Larsson. The late, great, brilliant Tommy Burns. They went through them all tonight. I was just waiting on Packie’s (Bonner’s) song. There should have been.”

Bonner responded and laughed: “Then they finished off with a rendering of Tierney from that perspective. That was always going to happen. It was more about the frustration that they couldn’t get that second goal – once the second goal goes in, then that whole pressure goes. A completely different type of game then. Job done. He (Rodgers) will be happy he has got the three points. I am not sure he will be happy that they haven’t created more chances.”
