Celtic defender Filip Benkovic is set to leave the club at the end of the season and return to his parent club Leicester City.

That was always going to be the case, it seemed unlikely that the Premier League side were going to allow the player to extend his loan.

Unfortunately for Benkovic, he hasn’t featured for the Hoops in recent weeks. Manager Neil Lennon has selected players who are presumably going to be at the club next season. Those players have included centre-backs Jozo Simunovic and Kristoffer Ajer.

That could mean that Benkovic doesn’t get a chance to bid farewell to the Hoops support, which he deserves to do.

Played key role in difficult spell

The centre-back, alongside Dedryck Boyata, played a key role for the Hoops in the run-up to Christmas. They settled the Hoops defence after a poor start to the season and allowed the Bhoys to get back to the top of the league.

Unfortunately injuries have taken their toll since then but Benkovic overall has been a success for the Hoops.

That’s why he deserves the chance to say farewell to the Hoops support. An ideal opportunity could be the last league game of the season against Hearts.

Celtic are liable to make changes for that game, and one could see Benkovic returning to the side.

He helped the Hoops at the start of the season when it could have fallen apart. For that alone, he deserves the respect of the fans.
