Brendan Rodgers delivers hilarious post-match dig at the Rangers hype machine after Celtic win

Brendan Rodgers is a man who has had to listen to a lot of hype about Rangers in his two spells as Celtic manager.

If it’s not Mark Warburton, it’s Pedro Caixinha, if it’s not him then it’s Michael Beale. So batting away the latest challenger, for now, with his 12th derby win in 15 matches against Rangers shouldn’t have been much of a surprise.

All Celtic have heard this season is that Beale’s Rangers were coming for them, and then Philippe Clement’s Rangers were coming for them.

Rodgers was quick to point out after today’s 2-1 win at Celtic Park that he’s dealt with it all before. He’s done so with exceptional success. There’s little point in him paying any heed to the chatter.

Rangers are apparently always coming for Celtic

He said in a press conference [Clyde SSB]: “Over my two spells here I’ve worked against five Rangers managers. Every time, ‘Rangers were coming’. Every time, at some point. For me, it’s normal.

“If I listened to media and press then we would be in constant crisis mode and constant fear of Rangers. But it’s the fifth manager now. So, for me, my focus is only on Celtic and concentrating very much on here. A lot of the stuff that does go around I ignore it.

“I think we showed today that with a team that is still missing key players we are competitive, can play football and can compete. That’s what we’ll continually do. There’s no doubt that Philippe Clement has improved Rangers. There’s no mistake about that. We knew it was going to be a challenge for us.

“We had to be super brave, take on the challenge and that’s what I’ve always done when I’ve been here.”

Celtic are now eight points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership but Rodgers will know better than anyone that there’s so much work ahead to deliver the silverware.

The Ibrox side hold two games in hand so that lead could be quickly cut and we’ve seen already that off days can lead to dropped points from a Celtic perspective.

So while Rodgers will enjoy today’s win and a bit of after-match media patter, the hard stuff begins again quickly with a trip to St Mirren on Tuesday evening.
