Brendan Rodgers reacts to what he witnessed from Celtic up against St Mirren

Celtic dominated St Mirren from start to finish on Sunday, picking up their fourth win from four matches at the beginning of the 2024/25 season.

Callum McGregor got the scoring underway in the 3-0 victory with a fierce, low, long-range effort within the opening minutes.

That set the tone for Celtic to pressure St Mirren throughout and Reo Hatate made it comfortable for the Bhoys, knocking home a shot in off the post before the interval.

Then, Alistair Johnston netted a rare goal to kill the game off after 70 minutes, sweeping home Nicolas Kuhn’s assist with aplomb.

It was another confident, energetic display from the reigning champions and Brendan Rodgers was understandably delighted in his post-match interview on BBC Radio Scotland.

He said: “I thought the players were very, very good from the off. We played against St Mirren’s system really well, the 5-3-2. When you play against that it’s a switching game and all three goals came from that.

“It’s important for the team that you can’t just rely on your attacking players. For me, it’s about the full-backs and midfield players and the goal contribution coming from the whole team.

“There was lots of great play. There were a couple of wee careless moments with the ball which was natural with the conditions, overall, there was really good control of the game.”

Rodgers went on to praise his players for their team ethic when it comes to defending the ball too, as well as reiterating his desire to strengthen the squad in the transfer market before the upcoming deadline.

It’s a big seven days ahead on multiple fronts with a Champions League draw coming, too.

Celtic have yet to concede a goal in their opening Premiership matches and it’s clear that the players are feeling capable of meeting any test that comes their way.

The derby against Rangers next weekend will ramp things up. The matches since Philippe Clement arrived have been pretty tight and they are unlikely to make it easy.
