Callum McGregor’s season hasn’t started as well as some of his team-mates has. The likes of Odsonne Edouard and James Forrest in particular, have started the season in great form.

McGregor has found the going tough. He had a poor game in the 4-3 loss to Cluj which saw the Hoops crash out of the Champions League.

In his defence though, he was played out of position at left-back in that game. Recent signs though have shown that he is getting back to his best.

He played very well in the 2-0 Europa League win over AIK. He really should have scored in that game. McGregor did find the back of the net in the recent 3-1 win over Hearts though.

A trademark goal from the player

It was a trademark McGregor goal as well. A rasping drive from about 25 yards out into the corner of the net which gave the goalkeeper no chance.

The goal showed that the player has put the Cluj game behind him. McGregor’s upturn in form has come at just the right time for Celtic.

The Hoops face two games in the next week which will could define the early weeks of the season. The first game is the second leg of the Europa League play-off against AIK.

Will be a key man for trips to Sweden and Ibrox

Celtic take a two goal lead into the second leg, and McGregor will be important in making sure that the Hoops add to their lead.

Perhaps even more importantly, the second game is the first Glasgow derby of the season against Rangers. McGregor will want to make up for his last season’s game at Ibrox where he was played at left-back, in an experiment that didn’t work.

In a way it isn’t a surprise that McGregor didn’t start the season in terrific form. He played a lot of football last season.

However, his recent performances have shown that he is getting back to his best. Two good performances in the week ahead can only be good for both McGregor and Celtic.
