Can Vakoun Issouf Bayo be Celtic’s alternative in attack?

Celtic’s 5-0 Betfred Cup win over Partick Thistle saw Vakoun Issouf Bayo make his second start for the Hoops in a competitive fixture.

The good news is that the player scored his first goal for the Hoops in the game, a towering header giving the Hoops a 1-0 lead.

Obviously it is good news for the player that he has finally scored his first goal for the Hoops after joining the club for £2 million from Dunajska Streda in January. He was unlucky not to do so in his previous start against Hearts.

Type of goal scored will intrigue manager

However, it was the type of goal that Bayo scored that could be most interesting to manager Neil Lennon. It is not that often that Celtic strikers score headers. A rare headed goal was Odsonne Edouard’s first goal in the recent 3-1 win over Kilmarnock.

However, that is not usually the way Celtic play attacking football. The team likes to get the ball on the deck, and pass it about. When it pays off, it is very effective.

However, sometimes it is worthwhile to mix it up and play in a more direct style. The Hoops boss might not like to play long ball football, but it is certainly an option now that can be provided by Bayo.

Heading ability could cause teams problems

He looks capable of causing defences problems with his aerial prowess. That can only be a good thing going forward for the Hoops.

Despite playing some excellent football this season, the Hoops can at times play too intricately going forwards. Sometimes the team aims to play one pass too many.

That won’t need to be the case with Bayo. All you need to do is get crosses into the penalty box and Bayo can get his head on the end of them.

That could add a new dimension to a Celtic side which already looks set to cause sides plenty of attacking problems this season.
