Celtic’s winless streak in the UEFA Champions League is finally over after a 2-1 victory at home to Feyenoord.

Luis Palma put the Bhoys 1-0 up before the interval with a well-taken penalty which was smartly won by Liam Scales.

Yankuba Minteh finally took one of Feyenoord’s many chances after some slack defending to draw level in the 82nd minute.

However, it was Celtic who would experience late joy when substitute Gustaf Lagerbielke popped up in the second phase of a corner to score his first goal for the club from a glorious Matt O’Riley assist.

The Bhoys fought for every bit of the three points, showing a clear desire to get the job done and please the home supporters despite already being knocked out of the tournament.

Long-standing Champions League winless streak finally over for Celtic

Celtic previously hadn’t picked up a victory at this stage of the competition since beating Anderlecht away from home in 2017.

They also hadn’t won at home in the group stage of the Champions League since way back in 2013 when a Neil Lennon side took care of Ajax by a 2-1 margin.

Now those streaks are over. While tonight’s win doesn’t mean anything in terms of progression further in the competition, it’s still an important moment for this group of players.

Celtic supporters needed to see this team win in the Champions League. These current stars need to believe they can win in the Champions League.

To do so in dramatic circumstances makes it a night to remember and gives the squad something to build on for next season.

Make no mistake, much was being made about this winless record in the tournament and pressure was growing with every match. It’s great to put it behind us.

Now, let’s take this confidence into the rest of December, with lots of work to do in the Scottish Premiership.
