Celtic have picked up their first win of pre-season with a 6-4 victory against Queen’s Park at the City Stadium on Wednesday night.
There was an entertaining deluge of goals, although the intensity of the match was very much what you would expect from an early summer friendly.
Kyogo Furuhashi was Celtic’s biggest contributor on the night. He netted a hat-trick of goals to add to his opener against Ayr United on Friday night.
Matt O’Riley, Hyeongyu Oh and Francis Turley were the others on the scoresheet for the away side. Brendan Rodgers gave minutes to a massive 22 players across the 90 minutes, summing up what this exercise was for.
Celtic’s first half against Queen’s Park
The Bhoys started with a lineup of Scott Bain, Tomoki Iwata, Stephen Welsh, Dane Murray, Yuki Kobayashi, Bosun Lawal, Matt O’Riley, Odin Holm, Hyunjun Yang, Mikey Johnston and Kyogo Furuhashi.
The initial stages were positive for Celtic and Kyogo opened the scoring after just six minutes after springing through a mishap in the Spiders’ defence and slotting home from close range.
Ruari Paton and Dom Thomas gave the home side a surprise lead with two goals within 22 minutes, sparking Celtic into a new gear.
Kobayashi’s strike deflected in off Kyogo to level the scoring. Then, Lawal pinged a classy ball forward for Johnston to set up O’Riley and put Rodgers’ side ahead before the interval.

Celtic continue scoring in the second half
Benjamin Siegrist, Hyeokkyu Kwon and Thomas Hatton came into the came for the second half as Celtic looked to continue their attacking outlook and pressure Queen’s Park.
Kyogo got his hat-trick on the hour mark before the manager decided to make a raft of youthful changes.
Hyeongyu Oh, Mitchel Frame, Lenny Agbaire, Mitchell Robertson, Josh Dede, Kyle Ure, Colby Donovan and Francis Turley all came into the match for a chance to impress.
Oh scored from the edge of the box with a low drive before setting up Turley for his dream goal coming into the senior side for the first time.
To Queen’s Park’s credit, they continued to have phases of pressure of their own and netted two more in the second 45 minutes.
Defensively then it was far from a Celtic classic, but it was a decent enough run out that will build fitness ahead of stiffer tests to come. Importantly there were no injury worries.
It’s good to see the senior players in attacking form while the younger players will be learning plenty of lessons in other areas of the pitch.
The USA tour now awaits – that will be a much more telling series of fixtures. DC United are first up on Sunday 21st July before games against Manchester City and Chelsea following over the next six days.
