Celtic did something they have never done before in Europe against Utrecht

Celtic are in the next round of the Europa League after beating Utrecht.

Martin O’Neill led out a Hoops side at Celtic Park in a European competition for the first time since 2004.

It looked like a comfortable victory at one stage as Celtic raced into a 3-0 lead before two goals from the opposition had hearts in mouths.

Auston Trusty made sure of the win with a header and the Hoops will now face either Stuttgart or Ferencvaros in the play-off stage.

That is the most important part of Thursday’s win, but it didn’t stop them from making history in Europe.

Celtic fans would you rather: Win the Europa League but miss out on the league title?

Or… get knocked out of the Europa League and win the title?

Celtic set European club record with scintillating start vs Utrecht

When the third goal went in, some supporters could have been forgiven for thinking that they could be treated to double figures.

While that proved to not be the case, they still managed to score three times within the first 20 minutes of a European game for the first time in the club’s history.

Since the 2003 UEFA Cup final, coincidentally when O’Neill was last in charge, Celtic have found their continental adventures much more difficult to manoeuver.

Benjamin Nygren was the standout player, but who else impressed for Celtic?

What is Celtic’s biggest win in Europe?

As impressive as a 4-2 win is on paper, it is some way off being Celtic’s biggest win in Europe.

That prize goes to a Champions League qualifier in 2000, when they beat Suduva in a UEFA Cup qualifier.

No surprise that once again, it was O’Neill in charge of that game as Celtic’s dominance made them no match at all for the Lithuanian outfit.
