Celtic duo help Ireland under21s to notable victory

The Celtic duo of Lee O’Connor and Jonathan Afolabi will return to the club after the international break with a huge spring in their step.

The pair helped the Ireland under 21 side to a notable victory in qualifying for the European Championship. Ireland recorded a notable 3-1 win in Sweden, with both players starting the game.

Afolabi actually found the back of the net in the game, but the goal was disallowed. O’Connor played the entity of the game. Whilst Afolabi, who was making his first start for the under 21s, was substituted in the second-half.

Afolabi also played a role in Ireland’s equaliser in the game, his blocked cross finding its’ way to Troy Parrott, who found the back of the net.

Now that the duo have got played in a notable victory, they will want that feeling to continue when they return to Celtic Park.

For the moment though, they may have to be content with playing for the Celtic Academy side. It will be interesting to see if either player manages to make the breakthrough to the Hoops first-team this season.

It won’t be easy, as the Hoops have plenty of players in both defence and attack. Still, the pair can be delighted with the role they played in Ireland’s win.

Neil Lennon will no doubt have taken note of the result, and perhaps it will help the duo when they return to Celtic.
