One year ago, Celtic were struggling to get their season going. The team had started the league season quite poorly, dropping points in two of the first five league games of the season.

The team needed the Europa League to kickstart their season, and thankfully Leigh Griffiths was able to provide the goal the Hoops needed.

His late winner gave the Hoops a 1-0 victory over Rosenborg, to get the Europa League campaign off to a good start.

A year later the Hoops are in a much different place, having won the first five league games of the season. The Hoops will go into this season’s Europa League opener against Rennes full of confidence.

Interestingly, the player who scored the winner against Rosenborg, Leigh Griffiths, may not even feature against Rennes.

At the moment, Griffiths seems to be third choice striker at the club, behind Odsonne Edouard and Vakoun Issouf Bayo.

Didn’t feature in recent win

The latest example of this was in the recent 1-0 win over Hamilton. With both Bayo and Griffiths on the bench, it was Bayo who came on to replace Edouard as Celtic’s lone striker.

That seemed to indicate that for the moment, Griffiths is third in line in the strikers department at the club. That does not mean that Griffiths will not have a role to play for the Hoops this season.

He may well feature during the game from off the bench. If the Hoops are looking for a goal late on, then Griffiths could be the man to provide it.

It was always going to be difficult for Griffiths to hit the ground running this season, after missing the second-half of last season.

However, he has fared reasonably well for the Hoops so far this season. Griffiths may have to bide his time before his next start for the Hoops. However, he could still contribute to the Europa League opener.
