Scott Bain has slammed Motherwell for their antics yesterday, as he saw his chances of catching Fraser Forster’s shutout record fade away.
Celtic were 2-0 ahead against Motherwell yesterday and cruising. That was until Kristoffer Ajer kicked the ball out for Ryan Christie to receive treatment, only for Motherwell to not give them the ball back and catch Celtic out. Gboly Ariyibi scored, and Celtic’s league shutout run ended at eight matches.
Former Celtic goalkeeper Forster famously set the record for most league minutes without conceding a goal. That stood at 1,256 minutes before Jonny Hayes scored into him for Aberdeen back in 2014.
Bain himself was on minute 814 when Ariyibi cruelly slotted past him. It came after a stunning record of eight consecutive Premiership clean sheets.
And, speaking today on Celtic’s official Twitter account, Bain couldn’t believe the nature of yesterday’s goal.
Time to start it again
Now that we’ve heard Bain’s reaction, it’s probably time to move on.
It’s pleasing to hear the likes of Bain and Brendan Rodgers come out and give their comments regardless. It’s vital these kinds of injustices get highlighted when you win games, and not only when you lose.
But now, Bain’s attention will immediately turn to what will be a massive Wednesday evening at Tynecastle. Hearts won’t allow Celtic’s defence a minute to get lackadaisical, and it’s down to Bain and the rest to make sure their frustration over the goal doesn’t carry over.
Should the Motherwell players be embarrassed with themselves? Yes, 100% and regardless of how Steve Robinson wants to portray the situation. But it’s done now and everyone has had their say.
It will certainly be interesting to see how Celtic and Motherwell deal with each other next time around. Does sportsmanship fully go out the window? Do we be the bigger club and rise above it? It’s hard when a team so gleefully takes a goal like that to act sporting towards them.
But Bain and Celtic will need to swiftly get it out of their system. Hearts are up next, and what a massive step to eight-in-a-row this could be.
