Celtic must avoid a repeat of last season’s derby hangover

There is no doubt that Celtic fans will have hugely enjoyed the recent 2-0 win over Glasgow rivals Rangers at Ibrox.

The Hoops dominated the game from start to finish, and proved wrong all the doubters who had the Ibrox side favourites for the game. That game is in the past though, and following the international break the Hoops will be back in action with a trip to Hamilton.

What Celtic will have to do is avoid a repeat of what happened last season in the first game after a derby win.

Last season the Hoops dominated the first derby of the season. They defeated Rangers 1-0 but there would have been no complaints if it had ended up 4 or 5-0.

However, in the first game back after the international break, the Hoops dropped points. Celtic turned in a poor performance and drew 0-0 with St Mirren. The game also saw Olivier Ntcham get sent-off.

Neil Lennon will not want a repeat of that situation this season. It would be extremely annoying to him and the Hoops support if the club lost points immediately after a hard-fought win at the home of your biggest rivals.

The Celtic boss will have to tell his players that in its own way, the Hamilton game is as important as the game against Rangers.

Same outcome as derby – three points for a win

The same outcome is at stake in both matches  – three points. Therefore, the Hoops should approach the game in the same frame of mind as they did for the game at Ibrox.

The trip to Hamilton could be tough for a few reasons. The home side’s artificial pitch and the fact that many Hoops players will be gone on international duty before the game are the most telling.

However, Celtic do have the players to get the job done. It is up to Neil Lennon to make sure that they keep this good run going.
