Celtic need to stand by Craig Gordon ahead of Hibernain clash

Ahead of this afternoon’s clash with Hibernian at Easter Road, there’s one man Celtic have to stand by.

He was the cause of much embarrassment on Thursday night as Celtic lost out 2-1 to Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League. Despite the fact that the Hoops ultimately qualified, he had the most red-faced moment of the night.

Of course we’re talking about number one Craig Gordon.

The former Hearts and Sunderland goalkeeper made one vital error on Thursday. Rolling it out straight to Fredrik Gulbrandsen wasn’t one for his highlight reel. It was made even more hurtful by the fact it was the winning goal on the night. It also very easily could’ve been the goal to send Celtic crashing out of Europe.

Fortunately, Tore Reginiussen spared Celtic’s blushes to send them into tomorrow’s last-32 draw.

It won’t have made Gordon feel much better about himself. He tried to put a brave face on post-match as he was interviewed by BT Sport. Despite his best efforts, however, the frustration and embarrassment was written all over his face.

Celtic, however, need to stand by their man and throw him right back into the fire at Easter Road today. The temptation is likely there to give Scott Bain a go, but at this stage that would be foolish.

Gordon deserves the chance to put it behind him

Gordon thrives on competition at Celtic. He’ll be itching to get back out there and make amends for his blunder against a seriously impressive and quick Salzburg side.

Many may also have forgotten the fact that Gordon made several terrific stops on the night against Red Bull. He denied Zlatko Junuzovic, Hannes Wolf, and Munas Dabbur with several top saves. All of that, however, was overshadowed by his blunder for Gulbrandsen’s Parkhead winner.

To be fair to the Celtic supporters, not many have given Gordon a hard time about it. Supporters understand how important their goalkeeper has been to the campaign as a whole as well as his big saves on Thursday.

That, however, hasn’t stopped the world from showing the blunder on social media.

The Hoops have to make sure they stick by their goalkeeper and get him right back into the mix today.

Hibs at Easter Road is always a crunch clash, with much riding on today’s game with Neil Lennon’s side. Gordon is also likely to be called into action on several occasions this afternoon. A couple of good saves, and he’ll put the Salzburg error firmly behind him.

Brendan Rodgers, however, has to give him the chance to make that happen.
