Celtic player ratings vs Young Boys as 8/10 star shuts up doubters and Adam Idah finally gets his moment

Celtic never seem to do things the easy way, do they?

Brendan Rodgers would have been sweating after his side had THREE goals disallowed and a penalty missed in the first-half of what was a shattering 1-0 Champions League win over Young Boys at Parkhead.

Kyogo has been humble in recent weeks in admitting he needs to get better in front of goal but he could have had a hat-trick on another night had he watched his runs against the offside trap.

Arne Engels, meanwhile, has been excellent from the penalty spot with six from six, but of COURSE this evening was the one he missed. And it was a poor one.

Still, sub Adam Idah was the man of the moment in the end as he forced the own goal from Loris Benito.

Celtic player ratings vs Young Boys

Kasper Schmeichel – 8

Beat away a shot from distance in the first-half but his double save after the hour-mark was phenomenal. The first in particular was superb and he was up fast to save the second with his feet.

Alistair Johnston – 6

Some of his passes were short and it slowed Celtic’s momentum when Kuhn might have had a run at it with the right ball. Fine defensively but his side would’ve wanted more in the offense.

Cameron Carter-Vickers – 6

Fans might’ve been nervy early on when it looked like Silvere Ganvoula was right up for the physical battle. But the American settled and was comfortable from then on. Never gives an inch.

Auston Trusty – 6

He often looks slack at the back but perhaps that’s just down to his lack of pace with the ball at his feet. More often than not he wins second balls but maybe makes it look like he’s under more pressure than he actually is. Desperately unlucky to hit the crossbar from a corner.

Greg Taylor – 7

Defended really well at the back but his desire to win the ball for the penalty was incredible. Was never giving the ball up and was eventually fouled. Adopted that mindset for the rest of the action, full of endeavour and never allowed YB to settle. Eventually replaced by Valle.

Callum McGregor – 7

Looked at it from the start and had his team rampant from minute one. Perhaps overzealous in his approach as he fouled Cheikh Niasse before teeing up Kyogo to score.

Arne Engels – 6

Failed to net from the penalty spot with a really poor kick but refused to allow that to dampen his confidence too much. Good deliveries from set-pieces and did the dirty side of the game, too. Took a knock and was subbed.

Reo Hatate – 8

Some of his passing was fantastic and he always looked to get forward. Did, at times, get caught in possession but won it back plenty in the midfield. Could have had a goal in the first-45 if not for a terrific stop by the goalkeeper down to his right. Special pass for the winner.

Daizen Maeda – 5

Had the freedom of Glasgow to run into all evening and that benefited his sprinting power. Some really excellent movement but just had to hold his runs at times. Stupid to kick out, it must be said, and he was sent off.

Nicolas Kuhn – 7

Twinkle toes in the first-half before being denied and he was always alert on the right-flank. Quietened slightly after the break but YB were always nervy – and rightly so – when he was given the ball. Was sacrificed for Liam Scales when Maeda was shown a red.

Celtic’s Champions League table spot after YB win
16. Real Madrid – 12 points
17. Juventus – 12 points
18. CELTIC – 12 points
19. PSV – 11 points
20. Club Brugge – 11 points

Kyogo – 7

Had the ball in the net a ridiculous three times but each goal was ruled out. Two for offside and one for a foul in the build-up. His movement is so good but sometimes he just goes ever so slightly early despite having the pace to avoid.

Alex Valle (sub) – 3

Saw a tad less of the ball than Taylor did but he was fine in possession as it was more of a wind-down-the-clock job as the game went on after Maeda’s card.

Paulo Bernardo (sub) – 4

Offered something different to Engels and he brought the energy for the final 15 or so.

Adam Idah (sub) – 7

The big man has been due a moment of his own and although it was an own goal to break the deadlock, the Irishman made it with a good effort on target to force the og. Showed his passion in his celebration.

Liam Scales (sub) – 3

Brought on to shore up the defence after Daizen was sent off.
