Celtic predicted lineup vs Copenhagen: Return to familiar system

Celtic make their return to Europa League action on Thursday night with a trip to Denmark to take on Copenhagen in the first leg of the last 32 clash.

The Hoops go into the game in superb form, having won all nine fixtures since returning from the winter break.

That has coincided with the Hoops moving to a 3-5-2 formation. However, for this match, we believe that Neil Lennon will switch to the 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 formation which he used for most of the first-half of the season.

Indeed, the Hoops had success playing in that system, it was used to excellent effect in the group stages, in the home wins over Lazio, Cluj and Rennes. Celtic, of course, finished top of the Europa League qualifying group.

Here is the team we believe Lennon will select in the Hoops’ return to European action.

The team

In goals, there is only one option, Fraser Forster. He has excelled for the team in Europe this season, you only need to look at his performances in both games against Lazio to see how important he has been to the team.

He is a first pick every day of the week.

Next is where things start to get interesting. As it will be back to the four at the back formation, the Hoops will need to pick a natural left-back, and right-back.

At left-back, we believe Jonny Hayes will be selected. Hayes excelled in that position in that famous night in Rome, and actually did quite well when replacing Greg Taylor against Aberdeen.

If Taylor was 100% fit he would get the nod, but it seems like a bit of a gamble to start him.

At right-back, to make his European debut, Jeremie Frimpong. He is now fully fit, and having been on the bench against Aberdeen, will be desperate to play football again. That will happen against Copenhagen.

As the Hoops will be playing two at the back, there is only one real option, the pairing of Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer, who have been solid this season.

The midfield three also throws up some interesting team selections. Scott Brown and Callum McGregor seem certain to start for the Hoops.

Who will play in key midfield role?

But who will play in the other midfield role? We predict Olivier Ntcham will get the nod. He has been in too good a run of form to leave out of the side. Callum McGregor has been on a great run of goalscoring recently, and he can play in the more advanced attacking role.

As for the front three, the main striker will be the brilliant Odsonne Edouard. On the right side, James Forrest, who has been effective as usual this season, will start.

On the left side, we believe Mohamed Elyounoussi will make his return to the starting line-up. It should be remembered that he started every game for Celtic in the group stages until he suffered his foot injury.

He is fit once more, and we predict he will start the game.

As usual, here is the team we believe Neil Lennon will select, in list form:

GK: Fraser Forster

RB: Jeremie Frimpong

CB: Christopher Jullien

CB: Kristoffer Ajer

LB: Jonny Hayes

CM: Scott Brown

CM: Olivier Ntcham

AM: Callum McGregor

RW: James Forrest

LW: Mohamed Elyounoussi

CF: Odsonne Edouard
