Celtic have dropped two crucial points in the SPFL Reserve League this afternoon in a disappointing collapse.
The Young Hoops were 3-1 in front at St Mirren heading into the final 10 minutes. Kerr McInroy, Brian Coffey, and Jack Aitchison got the goals that had them storming to victory. Yet, in the final eight minutes, a late double-whammy from Saints meant that it was two crucial points dropped.
It was the only game of the day in the Reserve League. Hibs’ 5-0 win over Ross County last week puts them in the ascendancy at the top. But they’re level on points with Celtic, and the Hoops have a game in-hand too.
Therefore, whilst it was a dreadful giveaway today, it doesn’t look like being disastrous.
As usual, the likes of Karamoko Dembele, Aitchison, and McInroy were the standout names from the youth squad today. Dembele bagged two assists and also hit the post as his development continues to take positive steps.
Yet another goal for Aitchison also proves that he’s continuing to be too good for reserve team level.
No senior stars taking part
The likes of Marvin Compper and Scott Allan can usually be seen in reserve matches this season. But, today neither were in the squad. Compper has been training with the first-team lately, but you would still have expected him to get some game-time with the reserves.
Looking ahead, Celtic still have several more games to play in the division. Next up is Ross County away in six days’ time. That will then be followed with a mouth-watering clash against Rangers at Cappielow.
It’s certainly starting to heat up in the Reserve League this season. And it’ll be ideal for the youth players to experience a title-race going right down to the wire.
But that doesn’t hide the disappointment of losing a two-goal lead today. Hopefully, the senior side don’t follow suit tomorrow in Paisley. But one thing’s for sure, the title is still there for the reserves to go and grab this term.
