Celtic will recognise National Famine Commemoration Day against St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday by wearing a special edition of the home kit.
The hoops will be emblazoned with the club’s Celtic cross logo, with a number of the jerseys then being auctioned off in aid of the charitable arm Celtic FC Foundation.
The club said this week [CelticFC.com]: “Unquestionably, The Great Hunger was a transforming event in Ireland, which changed the demographic and cultural landscape forever. Indeed, there is nothing else in the history of the Irish people that can be likened to The Great Hunger, either for its immediate impact, or its legacy of emigration, cultural loss and decline of the Irish language.
“The origins of Celtic Football Club will forever be connected to The Great Famine and it is hugely important that we once again mark this annual memorial. It is vitally important that we always remember the devastating and lasting affect which the Famine had on the lives of so many millions of people, and everyone at Celtic is pleased again to play our part in this year’s commemoration.”
A Mass will also be held at St Mary’s in the Calton, the birthplace of Celtic, at 10 am this morning. Then at 11 am, a wreath-laying service will take place at the Famine Memorial statue in the grounds of the church.
This year’s National Famine Commemoration, which will be led by Irish President Michael D. Higgins, will take place on the site of the old Milford Workhouse and graveyard in Milford, Co. Donegal at 2 pm on Sunday, May 21st.
Celtic recognises this day annually, ensuring that the modern club’s links to its formation and cultural foundation are never forgotten. It’s important that the current generation of supporters and those in the future fully understand Celtic’s roots.
With money also being raised for charity, it’s fantastic to see the club continue to take part in the commemoration day.
