Celtic vs Rangers: Kris Commons reckons bold and exciting Lennon decision is 'a certainty'
Former Celtic player Kris Commons believes it’s ‘a certainty’ that Neil Lennon will opt to play both Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard against Rangers on Saturday.
Lennon has reforged the fires up front by selecting the two players in recent matches.
They were particularly impressive against Hamilton at the weekend.
However, the test against Rangers is entirely different, and the manager could be tempted to revert to a one-striker formation.
Not so, says Commons, who feels that it’s a guarantee that Griffiths and Edouard will get game time together in the biggest match of the season so far.
He wrote in his Scottish Daily Mail column today (28/12 print edition, Verdict supplement page 16): “That’s as good as Edouard has looked in a Celtic jersey in a long time. Griffiths, meanwhile, now has three goals in the space of a week after finding the net against Hearts, Ross County and Hamilton.
“For me, it’s now a certainty that they will start together against Rangers at Ibrox this weekend. They are finding form at just the right moment.
“Given the problems Celtic have had at the back this season, I don’t see them keeping a clean sheet against Rangers.
“Their best form of defence will be to go on the attack. Even against a Rangers team with a miserly defence, their best chance of getting a result will be to try and go at it all guns blazing.”
Lennon likes Celtic pragmatism at Ibrox
I can’t recall too many occasions that Lennon has gone ‘all guns blazing’ at Ibrox. Then again, I can’t remember the last time we needed a win so badly at the home of our rivals.
Three points are a must this weekend if Celtic are to keep ten-in-a-row dreams alive. A draw doesn’t do us much use at all given Rangers’ form and consistency against the rest of the Premiership.
A Griffiths and Edouard double act is the way to go for me.
I’d love to see us take the game to Rangers.
There’s no Ibrox crowd to contend with, and our attacking talent is more substantial than our defensive talent, as Commons points out.
With Ismaila Soro also in the team, we should have enough protection against the counter-attack, as we’ve seen in recent matches.
Whether or not Lennon is tempted to go for broke is another matter.
