Celtic's Lee O'Connor helps Ireland under 21 team achieve notable result
Celtic’s summer signing Lee O’Connor has been a regular for the Irish under 21 side recently. He started for the national side in their under 21 European Championship qualifier against Italy on Thursday.
He can be pleased with his performance, as he helped Ireland to a creditable 0-0 draw. That result keeps them top of their qualifying group.
Interestingly, O’Connor, who can play in both full-back and centre-back positions, played at right-back in the game.
Still to make Hoops breakthrough
So far the player, who joined the Hoops in the summer from Manchester United, has not featured for the Celtic first-team.
He has mostly featured for the reserves, where he has quickly become a regular in the side. However, playing at a high level for the Irish under 21 side can only help his development as a player.
Signed a long-term deal with club
It will be interesting to see how much progress O’Connor has made at Celtic in a year’s time. It should be remembered that the player signed a four-year deal with the Hoops in the summer, so he is going to be at the club for a good while yet.
But O’Connor will be hoping to have at least featured for the Hoops first-team by this time next year. Turning in good displays at international level can only help his prospects for the future. For now though, he will be focusing on his own game.
