Chris Sutton believes Celtic star Odsonne Edouard was ‘unplayable’ vs Rangers

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has heavily praised Odsonne Edouard in the wake of Sunday’s win over Rangers at Ibrox, writing in his regular Daily Record column.

The Hoops emerged as 2-0 winners from the first derby of the season, thanks to goals from the Frenchman and Jonny Hayes.

It was a fantastic performance from the team across the pitch, but again Edouard particularly stood out as our most effective attacking weapon.

Sutton is quick to realise it too. Even though Edouard has been criticised by him in the past, even the BT Sport pundit can’t help but admire his current contributions.

As quoted by The Daily Record, he said: “I have to say though Edouard was unplayable at times. He has once again proved that he is a big game player.

“I have taken a bit of stick because I’ve demanded more from him at times. Edouard is a young player and he arrived at Celtic Park for a huge fee but he is so, so talented.

“You just knew when he ran clean through on goal that he was going to score. His value just keeps increasing every time he scores in a derby which has now happened five times. Edouard can be anything he wants to be – he really can.”

Heading to the top

Sutton is right. Like other rare talents that have come before him at Celtic, chiefly Kieran Tierney and Moussa Dembele, it appears that Edouard is destined for the very top of the game.

It’s hard to fathom the player is still just 21 considering the maturity and consistency he has brought to his game over the last six months.

Celtic fans should enjoy his talent while we still have him. There’s no rush to sell him of course and hopefully we can get another season or two out of him before he is sold for big profit.

His current trajectory is putting him and us on a path for another huge fee from a cash rich club if or when he does go.

Right now we can be grateful he is happy playing under Neil Lennon and banging in the goals. Long may it continue.
