Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton thinks the Bhoys have been “bang average” all season and shared criticism of Brendan Rodgers in the wake of today’s defeat to Hearts.
The Jam Tarts won 2-0 at Celtic Park after goals from Lawrence Shankland and Stephen Kingsley. The Bhoys didn’t look like picking up the win from the first whistle.
The defeat is Celtic’s first at home in the Scottish Premiership since 2021 and Hearts’ first win at Celtic Park since way back in 2009.
It was a desperately poor performance and there’ll be a lot of soul-searching in the wake of this one.
Chris Sutton not happy with Celtic after defeat to Hearts
After the match, Sutton said on social media: “You can blame the board, you can blame the lack of atmosphere because of the Green Brigade not being at matches, you can blame the recruitment but ultimately Brendan Rodgers should be doing much better with the players he has at his disposal… it’s been bang average all season.”
Sutton touches on the fact there have been many issues in and around Celtic this season. From fan discontent to a sluggish transfer window, criticism has come.
But the former striker is also right in the sense that Rodgers takes ultimate responsibility for results and today’s simply wasn’t good enough.

The manager gets paid good money to come up with solutions to problems. He now has a big task on his hands to reverse recent struggles and get Celtic back to consistency.
There are still four matches before the winter break, including a huge derby against Rangers. There’s a serious risk of dropping more points before then and, unfortunately, there’s no real room to do that.
The Ibrox side can now go top of the league if they win their games in hand on Celtic.
Better is needed.
In other news, £4m Celtic deal now ‘likely’ and it could hasten exit of fringe player.
