Chris Sutton delivers instant verdict on Celtic defeat vs Betis; picks one player out

Like most supporters, former Celtic hero Chris Sutton was taking positives and negatives away from tonight’s Europa League defeat against Real Betis.

In summary, the Bhoys were very good on the ball and very poor off it.

Tom Rogic and Jota were particularly impressive while attacker Albian Ajeti scored his third goal in two games. However, the defensive frailties do come to the fore when assessed the 4-3 result.

Sutton summed it up with a tweet just after full-time which said: “Celtic are a great watch but still so naive defensively. The team will be kicking themselves. Every goal was so avoidable.

“Two up and letting it slip will be tough to take. Good to see Ajeti looking sharper and stronger.”

So, Celtic have nothing to show for their efforts in terms of points, but I reckon a few players will be taking plenty of confidence forward in the group.

Before tonight the fixture never looked like a win, especially with the injuries and absences that became apparent. However, we gave a good account of ourselves against one of the better teams in Spain.

There are obvious frustrations with the manner of the goals we lost this evening, but then it is Celtic away from home in Europe. It’s not like we’ve ever been successful on the road against Spanish opposition.

This was a threadbare squad, with many of them still new signings, still learning on the fly.

I’ve felt worse after European defeats, is what I am trying to say. And I’m sure Sutton is trying to say the same.

In other news, Rogic and Jota show what Ange attack can be for Celtic at European level.
