Celtic legend Chris Sutton hit out at a decision made by referee Jose Maria Sanchez in the 1-1 Europa League clash between Celtic and Rennes.

Ryan Christie looked to have been fouled in the second-half as he was challenged by Joris Gnagnon. However, the penalty was not given. Thankfully, the decision didn’t matter in the end. Ryan Christie managed to score from the penalty spot later in the game.

However, Sutton was not pleased with the decision, as on Twitter he described it as a ‘ridiculous decision not to award Celtic another penalty’.

It certainly looked to be a penalty, as there looked to be contact between Gnagnon and Christie. However, the decision was not given.

Celtic also saw Vakoun Issouf Bayo red carded towards the end of game, for two yellow cards. He could consider himself a tad unlucky to be sent-off. As yet, Sutton has not given his opinion on that decision.

A very mature performance

As for the game itself, Celtic boss Neil Lennon can be very pleased with his team’s performance. They showed maturity in coming from a goal down. The performance bodes well for the rest of the Europa League campaign.

In the next game, the Hoops face Cluj in attempt to get some kind of revenge for their defeat to the Romanian champions in the Champions League qualifiers.

If the Hoops perform as well as they did in Rennes, they can be confident of defeating Cluj at Celtic Park.
