Celtic’s defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park is clearly a disappointing blow to Brendan Rodgers and his attempt at defending last season’s treble.
The team’s performance was flat, lacked pace and creativity. In short, it was a performance we have not witnessed from Celtic in a long time.
Brendan Rodgers admitted that there were no excuses for the performance and said the team were simply not good enough in his post-match interview. I’m sure the Celtic manager will hold an in-depth post-mortem on the game as the day’s progress.
However, former Celtic striker, Chris Sutton, took to Twitter and offered his reason for today’s poor showing at Rugby Park. And as always, it was simple and straight to the point.
Sutton tweeted, “Can’t say it’s a huge shock Celtic losing… the squad is weaker than last season and that should never have been the case…”
There is work to be done in the transfer window for Celtic
Celtic have lost Jota, Aaron Mooy and Carl Starfelt this summer. Three players who were central to the success we witnessed under Ange Postecoglou.

And whilst Rodgers has brought in replacements for all three, it will take time for them to get used to their new surroundings at a new club and working under a new manager.
Of course, it’s still early in the season and this side are still gelling under Brendan Rodgers. Prior to today’s defeat, we still managed to pick up two wins out of two in the SPFL despite stuttering starts against Ross County and Aberdeen.
Clearly Celtic missed the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Reo Hatate and Alistair Johnston. But we still had a team out there that should have been good enough to win today against Kilmarnock.
Rodgers admits that there needs to be activity to strengthen the squad after today’s defeat. Let’s hope that activity starts sooner rather than later.
