Chris Sutton slams Celtic ‘shambles’ as Hoops icon ‘feels for Martin’ after pathetic Dundee United defeat

The fallout from Celtic’s demoralising defeat to Dundee United has begun, and few voices carry as much weight, or deliver as much sting, as Chris Sutton.

Celtic lost to Dundee United in such a meek fashion the Parkhead support could have been forgiven for thinking it was the Tannadice club who were competing for the title.

Taking to social media shortly after the final whistle, Sutton did not hold back as the former Hoops striker branded Celtic’s title defence as a ‘shambles’, and pointed the finger directly at the Parkhead board.

Should Martin O’Neill take some of the blame for the loss to Dundee United?

Chris Sutton says Celtic defeat was ‘coming’ as he hits out at ‘complacent Hoops

Sutton’s assessment hits on a nerve that has been annoying the Celtic support for months. Taking to X, Sutton said, “It was coming. This Celtic team have been a shambles this season. The centre forward situation sums the club up.

“Everyone knows the root cause. Celtic reaping what they sowed. Complacent to the core and trying to rely on Martin to bail them out. I feel for Martin.”

His claim that the club is ‘reaping what they sowed’ is absolutely bang on the money. The club’s lack of transfer business over the last two windows has been nigh on negligent.

For Sutton, the ‘root cause’ is clear, the rot set in from the top of the club and even O’Neill’s magic cannot save Celtic’s season alone.

Sutton takes aim at Celtic’s failed recruitment strategy

The most damning part of Sutton’s tweet was the mention of the striker situation at Celtic. In a season where finishing has been the poorest the Hoops support has seen for nigh on two decades, the failure to adequately bolster the frontline during the transfer windows has left the team looking toothless.

Sutton also expressed his sympathy for Martin O’Neill, and it’s not the first time the Celtic hero has moved to defend the interim manager.

However, should the Celtic boss at least shoulder some of the blame, or is he effectively trying to whip a dead horse to life this season?

As the post-mortem of this defeat continues, Sutton’s words serve as a rallying cry to Celtic supporters for accountability.

‘Complacent to the core'” is a heavy accusation, but after a performance like the one witnessed today, it is becoming increasingly difficult to argue otherwise.

In fact, many Celtic supporters have been saying it for years, not just this season. As the club stands at a crossroads, and as Sutton rightly points out, the warnings were there all along.
