There can be no doubt that overall, Dedryck Boyata has been a good signing for Celtic. He has helped the Hoops to two domestic trebles, with a third a real possibility.
At times, his defending can be top-notch, and should he leave in the summer clubs in England will undoubtedly express an interest.
Poor previous performances
However, one flaw in Boyata’s time at Celtic has been some of his performances against Rangers. He was poor in the Scottish Cup semi-final loss in 2016, a game which saw him substituted before half-time.
He also didn’t impress in the 3-2 win at Ibrox last March, although to be far he may not have been fully fit in that game.
Arguably his worst performance against the Ibrox side came in the 1-0 loss in December. He struggled to cope with Alfredo Morelos and his passing was all over the place.
Good way to say farewell
In what is potentially his last home Glasgow derby on Sunday, Boyata owes the fans a performance. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, a dominant performance over Rangers would be a good way to say farewell.
He is more than capable of turning in a good display. He was excellent in the 1-0 win over Rangers in September. Neil Lennon knows that if Boyata is on his game he can play a big part in helping Celtic pick up the three points. It is up to both men to ensure that the player is on the winning side.
