Five things we learned from Celtic’s win vs Kilmarnock, as Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda are finished

To say that was chaotic from Celtic would be an understatement of the highest order.

For the past week, Martin O’Neill has watched his Celtic side produce the late, late show against Dundee in the Scottish Cup and then Livingston on Wednesday night.

But the best of the lot was Celtic’s win over Kilmarnock on Sunday, with Julian Araujo proving to be the hero with a quite stunning 97th-minute winner.

These are the five things we learned as Celtic came from 2-0 down to secure a valuable three points in the race to win the Premiership title.

Julian Araujo got the winner, but who was your man of the match? Tell us below

Celtic need to sign a defensive midfielder

There might be a fair few midfielders leaving in the summer, but whatever happens, Celtic need to sign a defensive brain to add bite, legs and power to proceedings.

Callum McGregor isn’t getting any younger, but he needs help in the middle of the park, as that Victor Wanyama or Scott Brown-esque player needs to be purchased.

Is the Celtic midfield too one-dimensional?

Junior Adamu’s substitution was unfair

O’Neill rang the changes at half-time by bringing in three new faces onto the pitch, including Junior Adamu, who went off for Tomas Cvancara.

It was slightly unfair on Celtic’s deadline day signing because he wasn’t at fault for that abject first-half showing, and should count himself unlucky that he was ruthlessly hooked off.

Sebastian Tounekti is coming to life at Celtic

Sebastian Tounekti has brilliant ball-carrying ability, and he has showcased that ever since he made his debut against Killie back in August.

But during his opening few months, it was more smoke without fire from the 23-year-old.

However, in recent weeks, Tounekti has started to come to life at Celtic, as was proven by his wonder goal after he was subbed on by O’Neill at the break, which began the stunning comeback.

Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda are finished

It’s sad the way this is ending, but Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate are in a situation where they no longer deserve to start for the champions of Scotland.

Hatate was hooked at half-time. He wasn’t moving the ball quickly enough and was far too lazy when on the ball, including nearly putting Killie through on goal.

Then you have Maeda, who has lost that spark, that one-touch play, and attacking threat to his game. Just like Hatate, he was also subbed off, but after the hour mark for James Forrest.

Julian Araujo is proving to be an outstanding signing

Signed in chaotic circumstances, at the start of January, when Wilfried Nancy was still in charge, and then making his debut against Rangers.

Put all of that aside, and Araujo has proven to be an outstanding signing so far, and has made that right-back spot his own.

Alistair Johnston has been a huge miss this season, but not since Araujo has been in the building because he has played with such colour, dynamism and passion.
