There is no doubting who is one of Celtic’s heroes of the 2-1 Europa League win over Lazio is. That player is Hoops goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
He helped the Hoops secure the win on an emotional night at Celtic Park with a fabulous injury time save from a Danilo Cataldi strike.
Forster was delighted after the win, could even see similarities in the victory over Lazio and the legendary 2-1 win over Barcelona in 2012, which he also played in.
“Did it rekindle memories of the Barcelona win? Yeah, a little bit” he said, as reported by the Scottish Sun.
“Just buzzing”
“I am just buzzing, I don’t think anyone will know how much it means to me. It went my way. It was nice to make the saves and contribute to a fantastic team performance.”
You can see why the win means so much to Forster, as he rarely played for Southampton for a year before making his return to the Hoops on loan.
As for his claim that the win brings up memories of the Barcelona victory, there are some similarities. Celtic were under pressure for periods of both games.
Big achievement in defeating Serie A side
However, it has to be said that Lazio are not as good a side as the Barcelona one that Celtic defeated. However, that should not take away from the achievement of the current Hoops side in defeating the Italian side.
It will certainly go down as one of Celtic’s most memorable European victories in a long time. It is a result all at the club should take great pride in.
None more so than Forster, who deserves heaps of credit for the save that helped the Hoops move one step closer to the last 32 of the Europa League.
